Dr. Theresa Dubois
PsyD, LMFT
FOUNDER, PSYCHOTHERAPIST
Who knew a childhood friend’s expansive collection of Breyer horse figurines and the welcoming nature of her family would beckon Theresa many years later to create Rise Canyon Ranch. Knowing the positive imprint the family left in her life, it makes perfect sense.
Through hard work, determination and courage, Theresa has created a safe place for people to visit, discover and most importantly feel like they belong – all aspects imparted by a family who opened their hearts to a neighborhood kid who relished the opportunity.
In the beginning, an absolute lack of knowledge and understanding of horsemanship did not deter Theresa’s intentions. Just as she challenges her clients to push past comfort zones to learn and grow, she began by taking horseback riding lessons. Sure, it took her 10 ill-fated visits before she mustered the courage to get out of the car, but once she did she never looked back.
Riding, caring for, and learning first-hand about the nature of horses spawned a deep understanding of their ability to connect with humans. In 2010 she welcomed Razzy, her first horse into her life. Together, they learned to trust each other made evident when Razzy intuitively knew when to comfort Theresa during difficult times.
For 14 years Theresa has been in private practice as a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT 45316) and Psychoanalyst. Additionally, she holds dual certification as a Certified Licensed Mental Health Professional and a Certified Equine Specialist both attained through the Equine-Assisted Growth and Learning Association (Eagala).
Adding equine-assisted psychotherapy (EAP), and other programs to her thriving therapeutic practice was a natural progression. Augmenting in-office sessions with an outdoor, learning-based, judgement-free advantage produces newfound results. She witnesses clients breaking free of persistent behaviors and emotions hindering them from living their best life. The unique benefits a horse brings to a session are indispensable.
With a growing corral of horses, staff and clients desiring the EAP experience, Theresa says, “If you would have told me 10 years ago that I would be doing what I’m doing, I would not have believed you. I’m living proof that dreams do come true.”
She welcomes all to be part of that dream.
